In a significant development for India’s electronics manufacturing sector, a state-of-the-art semiconductor chip manufacturing plant is set to come up near Jewar Airport at the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region in Uttar Pradesh. This marks the first chip manufacturing plant in the state under the Centre’s India Semiconductor Mission.
The project is being hailed as the third-largest investment along the Yamuna Expressway, following the Noida International Airport and Film City. It is expected to be a major catalyst for real estate and industrial growth in the region.
Timeline and Capacity
According to Union Cabinet Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, construction of the plant will begin in 2027. Once operational, the plant will process 20,000 semiconductor wafers per month, producing approximately 3.6 crore (36 million) chips monthly. These chips will be crucial components for display panels used in mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, and other consumer electronics.
Boost to ‘Make in India’ and Exports
Currently, India imports the vast majority of its semiconductor chips. This new facility will not only meet domestic demand but also enable India to become a global supplier. It aligns with the government's broader push to reduce import dependency and boost indigenous electronics manufacturing.
Semiconductors are often referred to as the "fuel" of the modern electronics industry, and this plant represents a strategic shift towards self-reliance in this critical domain.
Employment and Future Expansion
The chip manufacturing facility is expected to create 2,000 direct jobs and thousands of indirect employment opportunities. Additionally, the government anticipates that this plant will spur the establishment of display panel manufacturing units in India, further reducing reliance on imports.
Nationwide Semiconductor Push
This plant complements other major projects under the India Semiconductor Mission:
- Gujarat: One semiconductor fabrication (fab) unit and three assembly units are currently underway.
- Assam: An assembly and packaging plant is under construction.
